The Mill Race is a beautiful, recently converted and refurbished Mill on three floors nestling on the lower slopes of the mighty Skiddaw Mountain. Dating back to the 1700’s it was one of the original buildings in this small and pretty hamlet and it retains many original features. The Mill owns frontage to Applethwaite Gill set in a sloping wooded area where a large decked area overhangs the tumbling stream. This property provides a lovely base from which to explore the Northern Lakes.
Applethwaite’s slightly elevated position provides simply stunning views in all directions. From the front door you can be on the fells within 200 metres. You can walk up to the top of Skiddaw Mountain at over 3000 ft or take a less strenuous walk to the top of Latrigg which has stunning views over Keswick, Derwent Water, Bassenthwaite Lake and the Borrowdale and Newlands Fells. It is also possible to see Helvellyn, Blencathra and Scafell Pike from this viewpoint. Wainwright recorded walks from Applethwaite in his fifth book of walks in the Lake District.
Just 1.5 miles, via a lovely country walk, is the vibrant town of Keswick with its varied shops, restaurants, pubs and outdoor amenities. 1 mile away is The Pheasant pub at Crosthwaite which serves food. A 10 minute walk takes you to Underscar Manor which has a 5 star restaurant needing jacket and tie and next to this is Oxley’s Leisure Club with its delightful swimming pool, fitness room, sauna and jacuzzi. Oxley’s also features a 5 star Health and Beauty Studio and a contemporary cafe bar/bistro. Pamper Days can be booked on 017687-71595 – early booking is essential to avoid disappointment.
